Tips for Achieving a Voluminous Blowout

An iconic hairstyle that remains timeless is a bouncy, voluminous blowout! Cue a '90s montage with our forever hair inspirations - Cindy Crawford, Veronica Webb, and Claudia Schiffer. Achieving this look at home might require some practice and arm strength, but remember, practice makes perfect! With help from our volume hair heroes and expert tips, you'll master the art of a voluminous blowout in no time. Let's work towards achieving the big, voluminous hair you've always dreamed of!

  1. Start with a Clean Canvas: Begin by washing your hair with your favorite shampoo and conditioner. Towel-dry your hair gently to remove excess water. If you have fine, thin hair that gets oily quicker than you'd like - we recommend our InstaVolume Duo.

  2. Volumizing Leave-In + Heat Protection:
Use a volumizing leave-in conditioner such as our SmartVolume Leave-In Conditioner or InstaVolume Elixir to protect and add natural volume to your hair. Spritz it through damp hair, concentrating on your roots. Our Leave-Ins also provide heat protection, which is essential before using any hot tools.

  3. Add a Volumizing Styler:

Like our InstaVolume Volumizing Mousse or TotalControl Styling Crème. You can also use these products together to create the ultimate volume cocktail. This will amp up the volume even further! Focus on the roots for added lift and fullness.

  4. Section It Out: Divide your hair into two to three-inch sections before blow-drying for equal attention. Part your hair, separate the top half, and clip it.

  5. Blow it Out: Once your hair is slightly damp or even fully dry hair grab your blow dryer and a round brush. Wet hair is more fragile. Using high heat on soaking strands may cause damage or, worse, breakage.

Begin blow-drying from the back and bottom layer of your hair, moving up to ensure each layer gets the volume it needs for a full-bodied finish. Hold your round brush horizontally, applying the heat from the top of your strands to the bottom. Creating some tension as you slide the brush down. Use your brush to lift and guide your hair as you blow-dry. Focus on directing the airflow upwards to create maximum volume.

  6. Twist and Clip or Use a Roller On Each Section:

If you want your blowout to last longer, each time you complete a section, twist it away from your face to boost volume at the roots. We recommend clipping each twist to your scalp or using large rollers to hold each twist in place while you finish the rest of your hair.

  7. Give Your Bangs and Framing Pieces Special Attention:
There's debate on whether blow drying your bangs bottom-to-top or top-to-bottom is better. Try both to see what suits your hair and preferences. The top-to-bottom method is good for preventing frizz. Always use a low speed and heat setting to protect your hair.

  8. The Power Of A Cool Shot: For a glossy finale, make sure to finish by drying your hair on the cool setting. This will help the cuticle of your hair lie flat, meaning a sleeker, smoother shine.

  9. Finish with a Clean Hairspray:

Now that your hair has volume and bounce, preserve it with our award-winning UltraFlex hairspray. This product can be used on both wet and dry hair. Spritz a little through your hair while blow-drying for added hold, and finish by applying a few spritzes to your dry hair.
