As a clean brand, we look at Earth Day as a special time each and every year to reflect on our progress, our future, and most importantly how our actions as a company and as individuals are making an impact on our EVOLVhers, our partners, our ecosystems, and our planet.
Doing our part to positively impact the Earth and make operational and manufacturing improvements every step of the way is symbolic of our values and who we are as a brand and as a team. We’re honoring this by committing to share an in-depth update on our efforts every April. We hope you enjoy this look behind the curtain with us, and perhaps it’ll even inspire you to reflect on what you can do in your own lives as well.
A LITTLE BACKGROUND
Known globally as International Mother Earth Day, Earth Day is now over 50 years old, and was first created through the tireless efforts of Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, who aimed to make the fledgling conservation movement a part of the national discourse.
When 20 million Americans took to the streets on April 22nd, 1970 to reflect on the state of the planet, passage of the most comprehensive environmental legislation in US history was initiated. Then what started as an American movement became an international phenomenon which expanded its reach to over 184 countries with the help of over 5,000 organizations.
The theme for this year’s Earth Day is “Restore our Earth” – which refers to natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems.
Developing and sharing the best performing clean haircare on Earth is just one of our missions. Assuring that we stay true to our roots by using only safe and non-toxic ingredients that cause no harm to people or the planet are equally as important. As is protecting the Earth from harm with our company practices, consumption, and even our future choices for packaging and our supply chain.
EVOLVh is a US based company and our HQ is in Petaluma, California, a little piece of heaven in Sonoma county, where we band together as a team to bring all of our ideas to life. A little-known fact, however, is that we have a dedicated facility in Colorado Springs, CO which is now home to our chemist and master formulator, an experienced manufacturing team, and, more recently, our newly residing warehousing and shipping team.
Since launching in 2009, being at the forefront of manufacturing the highest performing quality products with the latest in clean ingredient technology has been near and dear to us - “the evolution of clean haircare” is what we’re all about, after all. But, we also want to ensure that we’re constantly stepping up our sustainability and supply chain “performance,” not just the performance of our products.
Yes, the decision to move all of our manufacturing and shipping operations to one location ended up saving us dollars (which we now use to fund more R&D to bring you more new innovative products), but the biggest impact was the reduction of our carbon footprint. Elimination of shipping to our various shipping warehouses cut our transportation use by three quarters, and we love any positive impact that we can actually measure and quantify.
An added bonus: expect an exciting new retail experience (yes to recycled materials) in the coming weeks!
This is the year of packaging innovation to support the Restore our Earth mission. Sustainable packaging has come a long way, but it’s the demands of customers and partners that are elevating the availability of earth-friendly options and speeding up the timeline. So the entire clean beauty industry has conscious consumers to thank for demanding packaging that supports being mindful of the planet.
Update: Packaging changes in our product line up are coming your way in the very near future.
We have always been committed to working with the most recyclable plastics for your safety while in the shower, but, more recently, we’ve made the pledge that all new products will have a large PCR component - an environmentally friendly and sustainable option that many manufacturers are using to support recycling programs and to help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.
(PCR refers to any type of plastic material that is made from post-consumer resins)
Teaser: for those of you who prefer glass, we will also have something special to choose from in 2021.
Another teaser here: We are working on rolling out a recycling program for all of our bottles and components - please stay tuned for updates and specifics oh so soon!
We’re thrilled to share that we’re partnering with One Tree Planted to plant a tree for every order during the month of April.
We’re honored to support reforestation, particularly in California, our home state, which has been severely impacted by forest fires. Trees clean our air and water, create habitats for biodiversity, contribute to our health and wellbeing, and create jobs for social impact.
One Tree Planted is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to global reforestation. They plant trees to restore nature and biodiversity. They also raise awareness about the importance of trees, offer businesses like ours a simple sustainability solution, and motivate younger generations to do something positive for the environment.
We care deeply about the planet and creating a business that gives back to nature and look forward to planting trees and continuing to challenge ourselves to improve and EVOLVE (it’s in our name, after all) with your help! Happy Earth Month, EVOLVhers!!
