Behind the Bottle: WonderBalm Magic For Curls

We like to think that the launch of WonderBalm Magic For Curls was a defining moment (pun intended) in the world of clean haircare. Our silicone-free styler has been making waves since its launch in 2018 and has found a home in the haircare routines of over 100,000 people looking to define their curls or achieve silky-straight strands. But how did this magical all-in-one balm come to be? We chatted with our founder, Boris Oak, to take a walk down memory lane and hear the story behind our innovative hero product.

Who inspired us to launch WonderBalm?

Our curly hair community inspired us to create WonderBalm. When we launched in 2009 (back when we had just 5 products), our products became an instant favorite and were loved by those with curly hair because of their ability to eliminate frizz, as most curly-haired people tend to struggle with frizz. At the time, we didn't have a product specifically created for curly hair, so we decided to dig deeper and create something super innovative to not only address frizz but also curl definition. We also wanted to formulate something without any "hold" ingredients, which usually makes hair feel sticky. WonderBalm Magic for Curls was our first product developed with our curly hair community top of mind.

What sets WonderBalm apart from other curl stylers in terms of innovation and uniqueness?

WonderBalm is super innovative in that it creates an ionic attraction between strands to create smooth ringlets that leaves hair feeling soft and silky. Typical hold ingredients most often work as a “glue” between strands and can leave hair feeling sticky.

We also realized that the formula was the ultimate defense against humidity, especially when applied to wet hair, as that's when hair is most porous.

While initially dreamt up as the ultimate product for curls, we discovered that WonderBalm not only performs and works it’s magic for curl definition but it’s amazing for blow-drying or styling hair smooth. It doubles as one of the best straighteners, and eventually, WonderBalm became a hero for people who don't curly hair. 

Is it true that there are only six ingredients?

Yes, only 6 ingredients! WonderBalm truly breaks the mold, and we like to think of it as a very advanced oil. We also didn't include any fragrance, which checks the box for people who are sensitive to scents.

If it's someone's first time using WonderBalm, what tips would you share with them?

Start by applying it to wet hair. A little goes a long way, so experiment with how much you use. For wavy or curly hair, shape into a curl or wave pattern using your fingers or use with hot tools for straight and wavy styles.

Since WonderBalm is super concentrated, how long do you think one bottle will last (if you had to guess)?

Depending on your hair type and length, it will usually last from 3 to 9 months. It's super long-lasting and a little goes a long way.
